TASTE TEST: Salsa

The Lineup: Old El Paso, Mission, Tostinos, Trader Joes, Green Mountain, Newman's, Pace and Chi-chi's

The Style: Chunky

Measures: Looking for common store brands / stuff you could find in a pinch either at a local grocery store/ corner store/ gas station or, obviously, Trader Joe's [who snuck in by lou of showing up way before the party].

Two rounds were conducted. The first, a straight spoonful of salsa. This allowed for full texture absorption and a flavor untampered by outside elements. The real deal, you might say.

The second round introduced the chip and "crunch" factor, crucial to creating a relationship between the tomato-based party dip and the party in our mouths. Trader Joes yellow corn salted chips were used [for cost effectiveness (this ain't the big leagues*)] already purchased though we would have probably preferred some mass-produced-you-can-find-in-any-food-mart-in-the-sticks-kind-of tortilla chip.

The Results:

Essentially, half of us discovered the amazing news that we preferred Chi-chi's. The other half went the route to Green Mountain. Unanimously, we agreed Old El Pasa was strained through gym socks and Trader Joe's was essential pizza sauce [remind me to use on tonight's south of the border pizza].

Another horrifying discovery in next week's taste test....
